DE / PASSPORT PHOTO FIELD GUIDE

German passport photos. The capture route matters.

Biometric framing is important, but a correctly sized file is not enough for a domestic German passport application. Check how the authority receives the photo before using an online editor.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What does a Germany passport photo need?

For domestic German passport and ID applications, use the official digital capture and submission process through the authority or a participating provider. A home print or ordinary JPEG download does not replace that process. The biometric photo template illustrates a 35 × 45 mm format with an optimum adult face height of 32–36 mm.

Germany’s domestic digital-photo process

German authorities moved domestic passport and identity-document applications to digital photo submission in 2025. Arrange the photograph through the authority or a participating photo provider and follow the instructions given for your appointment.

Do not buy an ordinary JPEG expecting to upload it yourself as an equivalent to the official process. PixPassVisa does not provide the authorised transfer service or issue a German submission code.

Biometric dimensions and head alignment

The official sample-photo template shows a 35 × 45 mm frame and an optimum adult face height of 32–36 mm. Keep your face upright and centred, look straight at the camera and avoid a tilted head. The template includes additional tolerances and special cases; the simple diagram here is only an orientation aid.

Use a plain, evenly lit background. Keep facial features unobstructed and avoid reflections or deep shadows. Ask the capture provider to check the current official template rather than relying on a generic crop.

Applying at a German mission abroad

Consular instructions can differ from the domestic capture workflow. Read the checklist for the particular mission and appointment. For example, the German missions in the United States publish separate adult-passport photo instructions.

A visa application is another distinct route. Your nationality, residence and document destination do not automatically select the correct photo specification. Use the application’s own checklist for copies, capture and file requirements.

Where an online check helps

A supplementary check can help you notice framing or lighting problems before an appointment. It cannot certify biometric compliance, register a photograph with a German authority or replace a participating photographer.

Keep your original and avoid beauty filters or face changes. If the photo is poorly lit, plan a retake. Buy a prepared file only when your specific application accepts that output.

BEFORE YOU SUBMIT

A final check is worth a retake.

  • Confirm the exact document and submission route.
  • Keep a recent original with no filters or facial edits.
  • Check lighting, background, expression and clear eyes.
  • Review the actual print or the portal’s upload rules.
  • Use an approved capture provider when required.
