The Australian print requirements

The Australian Passport Office asks for two recent colour photographs. Its published range is 35–40 mm wide by 45–50 mm high, with a chin-to-crown measurement of 32–36 mm. It specifies glossy photographic prints of at least 200 gsm, produced using dye sublimation rather than an inkjet printer.

A plain white or light grey background and an unobstructed, forward-facing portrait are required. The photos must be less than six months old. Check the official examples for children, accessories and medical exceptions.

Why a background editor is not the first step

The Passport Office recommends an experienced photo provider and does not recommend online passport photo services or mobile apps. Its guidance rejects retouching and shows an edited background as an unacceptable example. If lighting or background is wrong, retake the photograph rather than relying on digital repair.

What the PixPassVisa preset means

Our configured Australia preset is 35 × 45 mm. That is one tool setting within the published size range, not the only size allowed and not a certificate of acceptance. A preview cannot verify the paper, printing process or physical size of a print supplied by a shop.

Use our free checker for supplementary feedback before deciding what to do next. Keep your original file. We do not lodge passport applications, provide physical prints or represent the Australian Passport Office.

Before you collect your prints

Ask the provider to confirm the final print dimensions and paper finish. Compare both prints, check that the image is sharp, and ensure no border or scaling has been introduced. If your application needs a guarantor endorsement, follow the instructions in your application pack before signing or marking a photograph.
